New Buddhist

I am new to Buddhism and trying to learn as much as possible. I do believe in God. I don't know which is better Zen, Theravada or Mahayana.

Re: New Buddhist

Theravada Tradition emphasizes meditation on the breath to cultivate concentration and meditation on the body, feelings, mind and phenomena to develop wisdom. Mahayana has subdivisions: Pure Land, Zen, Vajrayana, etc. Pure Land Tradition emphasizes chanting the name of Amitabha Buddha in order to be reborn into his Pure Land - a place where all conditions are conducive to Dharma practice. Zen Tradition - emphasizes meditation and chanting to eliminate the noisy conceptual mind.

All Buddhist Traditions emphasize meditation and chanting to lesson the suffering in the world and to cultivate qualities such as compassion, joy, generosity, lovingkindness, and wisdom.

They all have the same goal.

Re: New Buddhist

I agree with the above.  No need to limit yourself.  I am a Unitarian Universalist, and a buddhist so I am open to all beliefs and practices.  I greatly admire H.H. the <span class="scayt-misspell" data-scaytid="42" data-scayt_word="14th">14th Dalai Lama, I love to hear and read his wise words but for me Tibetan Buddhism as well as many other schools is too sexist and has more ritual than is right for me.  Look around and find what feels right to you.  I have found Thich Nhat Hanh very helpful to my practice.  There is a lot of both of these great teachers on youtube.  That may be a good place to start.  I hope this helps.
